Jaap Stam is widely regarded as one of the finest central defenders of his generation. Renowned for his exceptional physical strength, pace, defensive intelligence and commanding presence, the Dutch international was one of Europe's most feared defenders during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Born in Kampen, the Netherlands, Stam began his professional career with FC Zwolle before progressing through SC Cambuur and Willem II. His impressive performances eventually earned him a move to PSV Eindhoven, where he established himself as one of the Eredivisie's most dominant defenders.
In 1998, Stam joined Manchester United, becoming a central figure in Sir Alex Ferguson's legendary team.
During the 1998/99 season, he played a crucial role as Manchester United achieved their historic treble, winning the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League.
His partnership with the United defence helped establish the club as the dominant force in English football. Stam went on to win three consecutive Premier League titles between 1999 and 2001.
Following his successful spell in England, Stam continued his career in Italy with Lazio and AC Milan, before returning to the Netherlands to finish his playing career at Ajax.
At international level, Stam earned 67 appearances for the Netherlands, representing his country at the 1998 FIFA World Cup and the European Championships in 1996, 2000 and 2004.
The EURO 2000 tournament was particularly memorable for Dutch football. Playing on home soil, the Netherlands fielded an outstanding squad featuring Dennis Bergkamp, Patrick Kluivert, Edgar Davids, Marc Overmars and Frank de Boer.
With Stam providing strength and leadership in central defence, the Netherlands won all three group matches, including an impressive victory over reigning world champions France.
In the quarter-finals, the Dutch delivered a spectacular performance against Yugoslavia, winning 6-1, with Patrick Kluivert scoring a hat-trick.
The Netherlands entered the semi-final against Italy as one of the tournament favourites. Despite dominating large periods of the match and receiving two penalties during normal time, the Dutch were unable to find a breakthrough.
After a goalless draw, Italy eventually progressed through a dramatic penalty shootout, bringing the Netherlands' European Championship campaign to a heartbreaking conclusion.
Although the team narrowly missed out on the final, the Netherlands EURO 2000 home shirt remains one of the most recognisable Oranje designs and a symbol of one of the country's most talented generations.

Where that proof exists it is listed with the product or sent with your order, and if you cannot see it on the page you are welcome to ask us for it before you buy.
We sell signed club and national team shirts spanning the 1980s to the present, alongside signed boots and signed photos. Some are official retro or officially licensed replica shirts and others are current-season shirts — the exact type is named in each product’s title and description, so you always know what you are buying. What is the same on every piece is the signature: hand-signed in person and certified.
The price follows the piece rather than a fixed rate. The player, the era, how rare the shirt is and how the signature was obtained all move it, and framed pieces cost more than loose shirts because of the frame itself and the secure packaging they need. Certification plays a part as well: third-party authentication by a house such as Beckett or PSA/DNA is a separate process from our own in-house certificate.
We sell them as collectibles, not as financial products, so we make no promise about what a shirt will be worth later. What we can say is that collectors look for exactly what we document on every piece: a genuine hand-signed shirt, a Certificate of Authenticity, a serial number that can be checked, and a signing photo or third-party authentication where one exists.
